Last night was historic. Around 150,000 voices in Last night was historic.

Around 150,000 voices in Sofia - and tens of thousands more across Bulgaria and Europe - came together and literally shook the ground! Chanting from the depth of our souls - Ostavka (resignation)!
Today - the government resigned.

I’m filled with a pride I didn’t know I had. A new fear of the unknown has been unlocked - but my hope is greater.

The young are fearless, unbothered and unstoppable - and they have my whole heart and support. I truly hope an entirely new generation of politicians rises from this - performative but effective.

There’s a lesson here for all of us - if small corrupt Bulgaria can rise up… anyone can. An individual alone doesn’t hold much power, but united - how exactly do you stop 150,000 people chanting your name?

I’ve never witnessed or felt anything like this I’ve never witnessed or felt anything like this in my entire life.It genuinely felt like change might be possible. Over 100,000 people gathered in that tiny space - and 11 more cities across Bulgaria also took to the streets.

For the first time in years, I felt something unfamiliar here - hope. Hope that maybe I’ll get to live in the country where I was born without having to uproot my life yet again, simply because corruption and not being ‘connected’ to the mafia suffocates anyone trying to build a normal, honest life - myself included.

And no, it’s not normal.
It’s not normal to have the press freedom of Saudi Arabia or the women’s rights of Tanzania while calling ourselves a European democracy. I’m exhausted of having to negotiate my human rights with every institution I come across for needing a document.
Seriously - FUCK this.

‘What we witness in Bulgaria happens not by accident. It happens in a country where justice has been captured by oligarchs and where those who stand for reform are treated as enemies of the state. This is the corrupted world of Delyan Peevski and his ally Boyko Borisov. Their despotic system silenced judges, prosecutors, security services, media. Delyan Peevski is a danger for democracy. One by one, he is taking control of the existing political parties. One by one, those political parties are used as tools to silence opponents, while in the past they used to struggle for democracy in the country.

Let me be clear: the dimension is huge. Bulgaria is part of NATO’s Black Sea strategy – a cornerstone of our collective defence. When corruption and political persecution take root there, it weakens Europe’s security and gives power to those who wish us to decline.

We urge the European Commission to send an urgent fact-finding mission to Bulgaria to assert the rule of law and the detention of opposition leaders. To enforce conditionality, we call for the suspension of all Recovery and Resilience Facility payments linked to judicial reform until political prisoners are freed and until Bulgaria demonstrates true separation of powers.’ - Valérie Hayer
